Short rig sail users? was created by JeffNH
Does anyone have any experience using the short rig sail? I see an inexpensive one from Intensity sails.
There are so many things out there, I also just noticed "zippered" sails with a halyard. What will they think of next??

I am also interested in the short rig sail. I am not heavy enough to sail the Force 5 hard on the wind with windforce 5 or 6.
I asked at Intensity Sails and found out that shipping to Germany is $75. So I wonder if a sail from a Laser would work too. The Force 5 is not common in Germany, but a Laser is and it would be easy to get a new or used sail. Does anybody know if that works?

I found a youtube of the intensity short rig in use, looked pretty good in the video.

Intensity is showing a reduced price of $119 I think, so I ordered one.

It is smaller than a laser sail, I don't know how they would compare except in square feet. The full force 5 sail is apparently 91 sq ft (sometimes it is shown as 96 sq ft). The short rig is 62 sq. ft. Normal laser sail is 76 sq ft.
Basically, I think the short rig is as tall as the first two mast sections, and the normal boom width, in laymen's terms ha!

You are right. The smaller Force 5 sail should be 62 sq ft (=5.76m²). The standard Laser sail is larger, but there are also two smaller Laser sails available:
- "Laser Radial" 61.35 sq ft (= 5.7m²)
- "Laser 4.7" with 50.6 sq ft (= 4.7 m²)
Both are made for sailors with less weight. The Laser Radial is also an Olympic class for women.
So the Laser Radial sail is nearly the same size as the smaller Force 5 sail. What I don't know is the length of the fore leech and the length of foot of sail.
I just read, that you ordered one smaller Force 5 sail. Can you tell me the exact dimensions? Than I can compare it if I find a Laser Radial sail.
Thanks in advance
Peter

Hi Peter,
I should be receiving the short sail very soon, they are close to me. I'll be happy to measure and post the dimensions. That would be nice if it is close to one of the smaller laser sails. I was aware of the laser radial sail but not the 4.7. I think with the radial they typically replace one of the two original masts sections to more closely match the radial sail.

Thank you Jeff, but it is not longer necessary to measure and post the dimensions. I found out that Laser Radial sails are rare and expensive. I cannot even get a used sail in a good condition for a fair price.
So I consider to order the sail from "Intensity Sails". When you get it, just tell me your experience. It it is okay, I will order it too.
