Mylar sails? was created by posaune
Does anyone have experience with the Mylar sail from Cullen? Even if not, what are the opinions between Mylar and Dacron?

I currently have a few-year-old Intensity sail and a probably-original North sail (from 1988), so I was looking at options for new ones. While it seems that many newer boats use Mylar, I'm not exactly sure of the benefits/drawbacks.

If it matters, I tend to use my boats only for six weeks in the summer, in all conditions, no racing (yet).

The mylar sail is a different choice. Mylar will retain its shape very well over it's life. The thing to keep in mind that its life won't be as long as a dacron. If you use it regularly you will see it last 3 to 4 years then the laminate will break down and the sail will come apart. A dacron can last a lot longer, however it will lose it's shape in a single season.

It is all about your needs. I wouldn't buy a mylar if I just daysailed. Actively racing it gives me a great shape over 3 years and avoids buy a new sail every year.

Lastly, the mylar the same cut as the dacron and it being cut right is much more important as the shape can be change as much as the dacron with the controls. I do feel it holds it's shape better in a blow as well.
